Twitter Questions

I joined Twitter about a month ago but haven't posted anything on there. How do I set up a profile with information about me, interests etc? None of those options seemed to be on there. Maybe, I wasn't looking in the right places or was having an accessibility issue? I found a way of doing it through searching on Google, but it's completely visual.

Also, are there groups like on Facebook and does everything have a short character limit? I'm really not into Twitter and would honestly like to find a much better alternative to Facebook cause the latter, while still workable, is getting frustrating.

No, there are no groups on Twitter. Even its website is becoming less accessible, though not as bad as FB. On your main Twitter page, there should be a link that says, "Settings." Go in there, and it will give you options to set your profile, or text settings, and so on. I think you can even do that through Qwitter now, if you are using that, but I'd have to read up on how. If you are interested, I could post that here, but I'm not sure if you use Qwitter or not.

I've heard of it but have never used it. Like I said, I only joined a month ago and haven't really posted yet. It seems kind of silly, to be honest, to have a social networking site with no groups or forums and with a character limit. I know some people go way overboard and write about everything they do and then post it everywhere. I've had to remove people on my LiveJournal friendslist cause they'd have tweets every day with tons of links and never put them behind cuts.

well twitter is beta testing the list feature which allows you to "group" together a bunch of your followers by whatever criteria you want. For example you can build a list of people you are following that are on the zone and call it your zone list. Then if say i weren't folowing any of those people and wanted to follow them all i could follow that list. I say you should giveQwitter a shot providing you don't mind using arecent windows OS otherwise there are plenty of good twitter apps for the mac. An App is the way to go especially if you have it set t o launch when the system turns on cuz then you don't have to keep going back to the website to check it you will be notified of updates in the background while you are doing other things.

AccessibleTwitter.com is an alternative site which is basically a web-based Twitter application.
also for your mobile device there's the m.twitter.com web site which provides stripped-down access.
Twitter is more a live stream rather than messages to and from people. Yes there are mentions and all that, but they are all in the public timeline. The way I explained it to my wife is imagine you're in a large room filled with tons of people and you converse with who you want. You can if you want, listen in on other conversations, and others can be listening in on yours, of course the illustration breaks down but you see then how it's different than your typical site like say this one with boards or Facebook where you have groups.
A lot of people use twitter but may or may not choose to tweet; I use it to see what's happening. And because of their open platform there are just tons of applications and widgets written using the Twitter API.
For my work machine I use Qwitter and on my PAC Mate i use the Twikini app from Trinket Software. It is very mobile-esque in that it's basically an icon list view with menu options on the soft keys tool bar. I haven't checked but they may have one for Symbian also.

I'm finding that Snow Leopard (and Leopard, though to a lesser degree) are worse than Windows. So I may try Quitter or that web-based sollution. I don't go online with my phone, but often, the mobile versions of sites work better with regular browsers and screenreaders.

tweet s60 for your nokia mobile phone also you can use twitter from your phones text messaging inbox providing you follow the format for sending reTweets or Direct messages and replies otherwise everything will post as a regular public message. and you can also set your account to private so only ppl following you can see your tweets and it wont be searchable from the public time line.

How do you change your username on twitter? I tried that in the account settings, but it wouldn't work...

Someone please correct me if I am mistaken here, but as I understand it, you can change the name associated with your account, but can not alter your actual Twitter username, IE, the address of your Twitter homepage. For example, my Twitter username is pyro1234. So, the address of my page is twitter.com/pyro1234. The name associated with my account is Jim D. I could change the Jim D part to anything I want, but could not change the pyro1234 name without just starting a new Twitter account.

Yeah, I think Jim is right on this.

Nah, you can change your Twitter name. I don't know exactly where it is, but it's in the settings page somewhere. I know people who have changed their Twitter user names just within the last week or two. It can definitely be done.

Post 13 by chelslicious (like it or not, I'm gonna say what I mean. all the time.) on Monday, 11-Jan-2010 18:40:24

yeah, you can definitely change your username on Twitter; I just checked to make sure. when you go to "settings" you'll see an edit field with your name, and one directly below it with your username which you can change at any time.

I wish I could change the e-mail associated with my youtube account. I signed up with one GMail account but now mostly use another and I can't find any way to change it. I want to receive all my notifications with this one and have people only search this address to find me. How do I do this? Sorry to get offtopic.

Using Qwitter makes twitter really easy to do. Takes the guesswork out of how many characters you have typed in a tweet and has some cool sound packs with it too. Hubby and I like the magic chimes sound.

I love the accessible site. It makes things so much easier. Admittedly, I hardly ever use Twitter in any version but yeah. Nice.

I use Qwitter a lot too.
